I chose to finish this collaborative project in honor of his light, creativity and constant nudges to be my best self.

"I began writing my chapter before my son’s transition. After his passing, I wrestled with whether to continue. Grief had changed everything. But I returned to the page with a heart full of sorrow and a soul seeking healing. 

Writing became my lifeline — a sacred tool to process pain, reclaim my voice, and honor my journey through motherhood. 

What began as a chapter transformed into a testimony of resilience, love, and the power of continuing even when your world has stopped. 

Completing this project was an act of devotion to my son, to myself, and to every mother navigating life’s most tender and transformative moments."

This powerful spoken-word style poem, “Masks of Motherhood,” is a deeply intimate and layered reflection on Black and Brown womanhood, motherhood, generational trauma, healing, and grief. It uses a conversational and poetic voice to guide a young woman named Tamika through understanding her emotions and her mother’s struggle—framing personal and ancestral pain within the collective experience of women across the African diaspora.

Masks of Motherhood Poetic Monologue

An anthology of 14 mothers sharing their perspectives of motherhood derived from their personal experiences infused with the colors of womanhood. 

The dynamism of color is emotive. We evoke emotions, feelings, and thoughts through colors. In this series of vignettes, written by amazing heroines who utilize color to weave an intricate discourse with the reader, we have heard the adage: "Black is beautiful." From Nubian complexions representing the African diaspora, in its vast array of hues, this treatise shows that blackness evokes power, pride, and regalness. The color black is also representative of challenging life lessons and dark mental spaces where prayer and therapy helped to bring illumination.

From the color black to the color purple, with its regal innuendos, to the dawning of a new day with yellow and orange hues as the sun rises and sets.-life unfolds on life's terms, as some of the authors grapple with new beginnings, power moves, and agonizing defeats.
